The Backup utility offers two modes: Wizard mode, which steps you through a backup or restore, and Advanced mode, which provides a more traditional backup interface and access to more options. To back up or restore data, you must have the appropriate rights and permissions. All users can back up files for which they have at least Read permissions and restore files for which they have at least Write permissions. Any user who is assigned the Backup Files and Directories right can back up data regardless of the assigned permissions. Any user who is assigned the Restore Files And Directories user right can restore backed up data. By default, members of the Administrators and Backup Operators groups have these rights. Planning backups includes determining what to back up, how often to back it up, and where the backup file is written. The Backup utility provides five types of backup: normal, copy, differential, incremental, and daily. The Backup Utility has default settings that apply to all backup-and-restore operations. The tabs in the Options dialog box for the Backup Utility allow you to change the default settings for the Backup Utility.

The Hibernate SessionFactory automatically binds itself to JNDI if the hibernate.session_factory_name property is set to the name of the JNDI node. If your runtime environment doesn t provide a default JNDI context (or if the default JNDI implementation doesn t support instances of Referenceable), you need to specify a JNDI initial context using the hibernate.jndi.url and hibernate.jndi.class properties. Here is an example Hibernate configuration that binds the SessionFactory to the name java:/hibernate/MySessionFactory using Sun s (free) file-systembased JNDI implementation, fscontext.jar:

After you have planned your backup, including planning the type of backup to use and when to perform backup jobs, the next step is to prepare to back up your data. You must complete certain preliminary tasks before you can back up your data. After completing these tasks, you can perform a backup or schedule an unattended backup.

Because Hyper-V functions only on x64 versions of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V can be reliably used to deploy all versions of the Windows 7 operating system. On Windows Server 2008 R2, you can install the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host role service. This service allows users to connect to a Remote Desktop Server that also holds the Hyper-V role, allowing users to connect to virtual machines hosted on the Hyper-V server.

An important part of each backup job is performing the preliminary tasks, which includes ensuring that the files that you want to back up are closed. You should notify users to close files before you begin backing up data. You can use e-mail or the Send Console Message dialog box in the Computer Management snap-in to send administrative messages to users. You can send a console message as follows: 1. On the Start menu, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage. 2. On the Action menu, click All Tasks, and then click Send Console Message. The Send Console Message dialog box appears (see Figure 20-6).

You can, of course, also use the XML-based configuration for this. This example isn t realistic, because most application servers that provide a connection pool through JNDI also have a JNDI implementation with a writable default context.

JBoss AS certainly has, so you can skip the last two properties and just specify a name for the SessionFactory.

1. Type the desired message in the Message text box. Note the recipients in the Recipients box. You can add or remove recipients. 2. Click Send to send the message to the listed recipients.

Sending a console message requires that the Messenger service be running on the computer that receives the message. In Windows XP with Service Pack 2, the Messenger service is disabled by default. You must enable the service on a computer before that computer can receive messages.

JNDI with Tomcat Tomcat comes bundled with a read-only JNDI context, which isn t writable from application-level code after the startup of the servlet container. Hibernate can t bind to this context: You have to either use a full context implementation (like the Sun FS context) or disable JNDI binding of the SessionFactory by omitting the session_ factory_name property in the configuration.
