In 1986 there was (in Britain) a well-publicised controversy over the rights of parents to be informed, by general practitioners, if an under-age daughter requests contraception (the legal age for consent to sexual intercourse in the UK is 16). The issue hinged on the question of whether or not parental consent is necessary. Mrs Victoria Gillick, a selfappointed campaigner for parents rights, wanted to protect the authority of parents over their offspring. Her position which she said was the only morally tenable one was that sexual intercourse under the age of consent is unequivocally wrong. From this she went on to insist that anything that encourages it (for instance, the prescription of contraceptives) must be bad, regardless of any other good that might come about (a reduction in teenage pregnancy, for example). Mrs Gillick gave us a classic example of moral evangelism. However, ethical extremists do not belong exclusively to right-wing political groups or religious persuasions. There are, for example, many left-wingers who are just as dogged. The Labour MP Clare Short once famously introduced a bill to outlaw the publication of pictures of topless women in newspapers. She argued that such pictures exploit women and encourage male violence. Her argument has merits, in my opinion, but it is not the only morally supportable view, and there is evidence both for and against it. Moral evangelists picture controversies as stunningly clear-cut. For them, there is always one entirely correct position (their own) while every other option is equally wrong. The moral evangelist understands morality only in the dramatic sense. It is her misfortune to be able to see only the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, the evangelist misses so much it is tempting to conclude that she hardly discerns the moral issues at all.

Figure 1.3, which we rst encountered in Part 1, The Retail (eCommerce) Server, reminds us of the basic eCommerce view. This is a model centred on retail customer transactions. It uses Internet connections handled via a Web server. This supplies the user s client with seductive and/or informative services based on Web pages, almost certainly in HTML or XML, perhaps containing small programmes (e.g. in Java) that run on the client. The pages may be of completely xed format (static) but are more likely to be dynamically created and lled with customised data extracted from a catalogue. By use of other dynamic scripts, customer requests and personal details can be also be passed into the database, for order taking. Both activities are supported by a suite of software known as the application services. This very simple three-tier architecture that splits out presentation, (business) application and database, is useful to position what follows, which is based on expanding signi cantly the application services and interactions with the database(s), into an ntier architecture. Let us begin by opening out the services into a layered model (Figure 1.4). This architectural diagram is rather different from the previous Figure 1.3, in that it does not at this level separate front-of ce selling (HTTP to client) from back of ce data management (e.g. by ODBC to catalogue). Instead, it treats them equally, spreading their functionality vertically through a number of layers. In the parts that follow, we shall look at these layers in turn. As covered in the introduction on the HS-DSCH, only turbo-coding is used for the HS-DSCH. This was motivated by the fact that turbo-coding outperforms convolutional coding otherwise expected with the very small data rates. The channel coding chain is simpli ed from the corresponding DCH one, as there is no need to handle issues like DTX or compressed mode with the HS-DSCH. Also, there is only one transport channel active at a time, thus fewer steps in multiplexing/de-multiplexing are needed. An additional new issue is the handling of 16QAM and the resulting varying number of bits carried by the physical channel even when the number of codes used remains xed. Another new functionality is bit scrambling on the physical layer for the HS-DSCH. The HS-DSCH channel coding chain is illustrated in Figure 4.5. For the 16QAM there is the speci c function of constellation rearrangement, which maps the bits to di erent symbols depending on the transmission numbers. This is bene cial as with 16QAM all the symbols do not have equal error probability in the constellation. This is due to di erent symbols having di erent numbers of neighbouring symbols which places the symbols closer to the axis, with a greater number of neighbour-
