Alright, let s get back to discussing joints and examine how they differ from basic transform nodes with respect to their coordinate systems Joints are actually a bit simpler than a basic transform node A joint s translations are always calculated in local space That is, a joint s translations are always an offset distance from their parent object, be it the world, another joint, or another transform node This is where a joint s orientation comes into play To experiment with transforming joints, create a small joint chain consisting of three joints Select the second joint, joint2, open the Attribute Editor, and open the Joint folder to view the joint s attributes Figure 9-6 shows a joint chain and its attributes in the Attribute Editor Notice that there are no local or world space attributes Since the Joint tool was set to orient the joints with X pointing down the bone, the translations of the second and third joints return the offset distance relative to the parent in only one value, X If you set the Move tool to translate in local space (set this in the Move tool s settings or hold down the W key to view the Move tool s settings marking menu), the transform manipulator displays the local transform directions When you grab the red handle and translate the joint, you are moving it along its oriented axis Doing so allows you to change the position of the joint without breaking the orientation from its parent If you move the joint in any other direction than its local X, the parent will no longer be oriented to aim at this joint Transform values in Y and Z will accumulate, and when this happens,

you know that the joint chain needs to be reoriented By selecting the parent joint and then reorienting the joint chain with the Orient Joint command, the local rotation axes will realign themselves and the child joints will return to having only one offset value given in X (or whatever axis the joint chain is oriented in) Another thing to point out about joints is that because they do not have other spaces to flush values into, freezing transformations will never affect the translation attributes The translation will always read the offset distance from the parent Period! If you set a joint s translations to 0, 0, 0, it will always drop right on top of the parent The rotations, on the other hand, can be flushed into another space If you were to grab a joint and rotate it, then perform a Freeze Transformations, the current rotations would reset to 0 and the offset distance would be calculated relative to the parent joint and flushed into the Joint Orient attribute, also shown in Figure 9-6 While this information may not be the most fun to learn, understanding it will help you build stable rigs in Maya and enable you to troubleshoot problems when things go wrong Ninety percent of rigging problems are usually due to joints or controls not being oriented properly So with that, let s build a skeleton for our character
