Because it has to examine many characteristics of a message, the Content Filter agent is the most computationally intense of the anti-spam agents . However, because Exchange executes it last, the load is reduced by the fact that the Content Filter agent only has to process messages that have been passed by other agents such as the Connection Filter and Recipient Filter .

In addition to using Microsoft s SmartScreen spam heuristics to detect suspicious messages, you can add words or phrases that you want to block or allow if they occur in messages by entering them on the Custom Words tab of the Content Filter Properties dialog box (Figure 14-15). You have to be careful with the words that you choose to block, as they might be perfectly valid in some contexts and objectionable in others. International companies have to be very careful in this respect, as they have the added complexity of dealing with multiple languages where words can take on different meanings. This also extends to slang used in different parts of the world. For example, a sambo in Ireland is nothing but slang for a sandwich. It has a completely different meaning elsewhere. Words are checked in both the message subject and body. The allow words take priority over the blocked words, so the Content Filter will allow messages through that contain blocked words if they also contain an allowed word or phrase. Also, the Content Filter will allow a message through that contains blocked words if it is sent by someone on the recipient s safe senders list. The logic here is that the recipient has made an explicit decision to receive email from the sender and should be able to deal with any objectionable content that arrives. However, the message is blocked and will not be delivered to any other

recipient. You can also define users whose messages are not checked by the Content Filter agent by inputting their names on the Exceptions tab of the agent Properties dialog box.

Messages larger than 11 MB are not scanned by the Content Filter agent . The logic is that the default maximum size for receive connectors is 10 MB, so an 11 MB message won t be accepted by Exchange unless the organization is configured to handle larger messages . It s also reasonable to assume that people who want to spread viruses and spammers don t send very large attachments because these would slow down message transmission too much .

As explained earlier, the output from the Content Filter agent is an SCL value for the message, which is added to the MAPI properties of the message. The value of the SCL ranges from 0 to 9 where 0 means that the message is absolutely not spam and 9 means that it absolutely is spam. A value of 1 indicates that the message came from a trusted internal source. You control the action that the Content Filter agent takes for a message after its SCL value is determined by adjusting three different thresholds on the Action tab of the agent Properties dialog box (Figure 14-16).
